If you think you might be a Young Carer
to complete our quick Young Carer test!
Writer Pam Beasant worked with our senior young carers on creating a story about a young carer based on their shared experiences. As a group they came up with the ideas behind I am Jake. The final story was written by local writer Pam Beasant and beautifully illustrated by Alex Ashman.
We launched I am Jake in schools on ‘I am Jake day’ to help raise awareness of young carers. Every class received a copy of the book, posters, I am Jake badges for each pupil and suggested activities for the day.
Jake is a boy with a lot on his plate. He has to look after his little sister, his twin brother and sometimes even his Dad!
With Billy Bob the cowboy by his side Jake discovers there are other young people just like him who look after their family too.
This is his story.
Books are available from the Orcadian bookshop or from the Orkney Carers Centre at the address below.
Without generous funding from Awards for All this project would not have been possible so a BIG Thank you to Awards for All.
Thanks also to Pam and Alex for their creativity and most of all to our senior young carers for their imagination and willingness to share their experience.
